Definition
The PSU is responsible for converting household or industrial AC power into the stable DC voltages that mining hardware requires. Full-size ASIC miners typically need 12V DC power delivered at high amperage, requiring PSUs rated from 1,200W to 3,600W or more.
Bitmain’s APW series PSUs are the most common in Bitcoin mining. PSU efficiency (80 Plus certification) directly affects total power consumption and operating costs. Open-source miners like the Bitaxe use much smaller 5V DC power supplies with barrel jack connectors.
In Simple Terms
The power supply that converts AC electricity to DC power for the miner. A critical component affecting efficiency.
