Definition

Censorship resistance is a network's ability to process valid transactions regardless of their origin, destination, or purpose, with no party able to block, reverse, or blacklist them. In Bitcoin, any node can relay a transaction and any miner can include it in a block, so suppressing a payment would require coordinating against a globally distributed, permissionless set of independent participants — a coordination problem that grows harder with every additional independent miner and node.

How the network earns the property

Censorship resistance is not declared, it is produced by decentralisation. Because hashrate and validating nodes are spread across many jurisdictions and operators, there is no single switch to flip. If one miner declines to include your transaction, another will, drawn by the fee — censorship by a minority of miners costs the censor revenue while only delaying, not preventing, confirmation. Even a miner that ignores certain addresses cannot stop those transactions from confirming through everyone else, and cannot retroactively erase confirmed history without out-competing the entire honest network's proof of work. The economics are the enforcement: fees make censorship a self-taxing strategy.

Why miner distribution is load-bearing

The geographic and ownership distribution of mining is what makes the guarantee robust rather than nominal. Concentrated hashrate — whether by jurisdiction, by pool, or by template construction — weakens censorship resistance, because fewer parties would need to be pressured to filter transactions. This is one reason a healthy, dispersed mining ecosystem, including independent and home miners, has value beyond profit, and why developments that decentralise block-template construction matter: protocols in the Stratum V2 lineage allow individual miners, not only pool operators, to choose which transactions their hashrate works on. A solo miner or a Bitaxe on a shelf is a small but genuinely independent path for any transaction into a block — thousands of such paths are the property, materialised.

History resists rewriting too

Censorship resistance has a second face: not just getting transactions in, but keeping them there. Because each block commits to all prior history and carries real expended energy, "unconfirming" a settled payment requires redoing the work of every block since — a cost that compounds with every confirmation. Blocking a payment and reversing one are both attacks on neutrality, and proof-of-work prices both in physics.

The custody caveat

The same property must hold at the relay layer, before a transaction ever reaches a miner. Running your own full node means you broadcast directly into the peer-to-peer network rather than submitting through someone's API that can decline you, and a node reachable over Tor resists network-level blocking of Bitcoin traffic itself. Diversity here matters exactly as it does with hashrate: many independent relay paths, many jurisdictions, no chokepoint. A transaction that can always find a peer to accept it and a miner to mine it is the whole guarantee, end to end. History underlines why this is worth defending: financial censorship is not hypothetical — payment processors and banks have repeatedly been pressured into cutting off lawful but disfavoured recipients, from journalists to protest movements, with no due process attached. Bitcoin's answer is architectural rather than legal: make the network's neutrality a physical fact that would have to be defeated everywhere at once, rather than a policy that can be revised in one boardroom.

For the individual, censorship resistance only fully accrues when you hold your own keys; funds on a custodial platform can still be frozen by that platform, no matter how uncensorable the underlying network is. The property lives at the protocol layer — to inherit it, exit the custodial layer. Pair this concept with self-custody and counterparty risk to see the complete picture: a censorship-resistant network plus custodied coins equals censorable money with extra steps.
