Definition

A Faraday bag is a portable, flexible version of a Faraday cage: a pouch lined with conductive material that blocks electromagnetic and radio-frequency signals from reaching — or leaving — the device sealed inside. The principle dates to Michael Faraday's 1836 demonstration that a conductive enclosure redistributes external charge across its surface, leaving the interior shielded. In bag form, layered conductive fabrics — typically copper, nickel, or aluminum composites woven into textile — reflect and absorb incoming RF so that a phone, key fob, or electronic device inside can neither transmit nor receive. It is the cheapest piece of signals-security hardware most people will ever own.

What it isolates, honestly stated

A properly constructed bag suppresses cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and RFID/NFC. The practical applications follow directly: a smartphone in the bag stops reporting location and cannot be remotely reached; a keyless-entry fob in the bag defeats relay attacks, where thieves amplify the fob's signal from inside your house to unlock the car in the driveway; a device suspected of compromise can be isolated so it cannot phone home or receive a remote wipe command before examination — standard evidence-handling practice in digital forensics. The honest caveats matter. Shielding is measured in attenuation, not absolutes: a good bag reduces signal strength to the point where communication fails, rather than guaranteeing zero leakage. Effectiveness depends on the materials, construction quality, and above all the seal — a poorly folded closure is a slot antenna. And the test is trivial to run yourself: seal your phone in, call it, watch it not ring. Cheap bags fail this test with embarrassing regularity; verify before trusting.

Where it fits in self-custody

For Bitcoiners, a Faraday bag is a modest but genuine OPSEC tool with specific, bounded jobs. A signing phone or any radio-equipped signing device can be transported without leaking a trail of location pings tying you to a time and place. A daily-carry phone dropped in a bag during a sensitive meeting or transaction cannot geolocate you or serve as a live microphone over a wireless channel for that window. And a decommissioned device awaiting secure wipe can wait in isolation rather than on the network. Know its limits equally well: a Faraday bag is not a substitute for an air gap — a truly offline signing device, or a hardware wallet with no radios at all, has nothing to shield in the first place — and it does nothing against physical seizure, malware already resident on the device, or the evil-maid class of attacks that happen when the device is out of your hands entirely. Nor does it protect keys at rest; that is what cold storage discipline is for. The bag manages one specific channel: radio, while the device is inside.

A layer, not a strategy

Buying guidance is mercifully short: look for multiple shield layers, a generously overlapping fold-over closure, stated attenuation figures across cellular and GPS bands rather than vague "military grade" copy, and stitching that will survive daily use — the shielding usually outlives the seams. Then ignore all of it until you have run the ring test yourself, and re-run it every few months, because conductive fabrics degrade with flexing and a bag that passed last year is not automatically a bag that passes today.

The right mental model is layered defense. A Faraday bag costs little, weighs nothing, and closes a real channel — but which channels are worth closing depends entirely on who you think is looking. Decide its place within your threat model and your broader OPSEC practice: for most people it earns its keep as cheap insurance for transport and travel; for higher-risk profiles it becomes standard procedure. Either way, it exemplifies the sovereign-tech ethos — a passive, verifiable, physics-based control you can test yourself, with no subscription, no firmware, and no one's permission required.
