What is Bitcoin mining?

The main purpose of mining is to set the history of transactions in a way that it is computationally impossible to modify by any one entity. By downloading and checking the blockchain, bitcoin nodes come to a consensus on the classification of events in bitcoin. Mining is also the mechanism used to introduce Bitcoins into the system: miners receive all transaction costs, as well as a ``grant`` of newly created coins. This makes it possible both to distribute new coins in a decentralized way and to motivate people to ensure the security of the system. Bitcoin mining is so called because it resembles the mining of other commodities: it requires a physical effort and gradually puts new units at the disposal of all those who wish to take part. An important difference is that the supply does not depend on the amount of extraction. In general changing total miner hashpower does not change how many bitcoins are created long term. Mining is intentionally designed to use a lot of resources and be difficult, so that the number of blocks found every day by the miners remains stable. Individual blocks must contain proof of work to be considered valid. This proof of work is verified by other Bitcoin nodes each time they receive a block.

Cloud Mining? What's the deal?

Cloud mining means that you do not buy a physical mining rig but rather rent computing power from a mining company and get paid according to how much mining power you own. At first, this sounds like a really good idea, since you don’t have to go through all the hassle of buying expensive equipment, storing it, cooling it, and monitoring it. However, it seems that none of these cloud mining sites are profitable. Those that do seem profitable are usually scams that don’t even own any mining equipment; they’re just elaborate Ponzi schemes that will end up running away with your money. What we do at D-Central is hosting services. You own the machine, we own the infrastructure and rent it at a fixed price. If your unit is profitable in market conditions you make all the profits, if not, you take your unit back.

Why should I mine?

When a block is discovered, the discoverer may award themselves a certain number of bitcoins, which is agreed-upon by everyone in the network. Currently this bounty is 12.5 bitcoins; this value will halve every 210,000 blocks. See Controlled Currency Supply. Additionally, the miner is awarded the fees paid by users sending transactions. The fee is an incentive for the miner to include the transaction in their block. In the future, as the number of new bitcoins miners can create in each block dwindles, the fees will make up a much more important percentage of mining income.

Isn’t mining a waste of electricity?

There’s been a lot of criticism regarding the energy consumption that Bitcoin mining employs worldwide. It is difficult to determine the actual electricity use for mining Bitcoin at any given time because there is no central registry of miners. Similarly, it is virtually impossible to accurately predict future growth because the efficiency of mining equipment is changing rapidly, the difficulty of mining varies, and the revenue paid to miners is highly volatile. Any reporting that extrapolates electricity consumed per transaction to project future electricity demand will likely inaccurately inflate future predictions of consumption. miners tend to choose countries with a high percentage of green energy for their operations. This is not a coincidence. Green energy is getting cheaper and cheaper even without subsidies and miners need to plan. Furthermore, green energy alternatives provide independence in a way that fossil fuels never could. A mining farm in a cold country with a lot of wind and sunlight could be a completely self-sustaining money machine one day.
