Block Subsidy Reduction Hedge (Halving Hedge)

Economics & Profitability

Definition

A block subsidy reduction hedge, often called a halving hedge, is the use of mining derivatives to fix revenue ahead of a Bitcoin halving, when the block subsidy is cut in half on schedule. At the April 2024 halving the subsidy fell from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC at block 840,000, instantly lowering the revenue every miner earns per unit of hashrate. Because that cut is known in advance, miners can use forward-looking contracts to soften its impact on cash flow. This entry is educational and is not financial advice.

How the hedge is built

The common approach is to sell future production through a hashrate forward contract or a cash-settled hashprice NDF at today's hashprice, locking part of post-halving revenue at pre-halving levels. If hashprice falls after the subsidy drops, as it often does, the hedge pays the miner the difference and stabilizes income. Industry data after the 2024 event indicated that miners who hedged across the halving window outperformed those fully exposed to spot, though outcomes depend on timing, sizing, and the path of bitcoin price and difficulty.

What it does and does not do

A halving hedge does not change the protocol or the subsidy; it only shifts price risk to a counterparty for a fee. It cannot prevent the long-run revenue compression that the halving schedule guarantees, and a miner who locks a price forgoes any windfall if hashprice instead rises. It is a planning tool for surviving the transition, best paired with efficiency upgrades and disciplined cost management rather than treated as a profit guarantee.

The scheduled subsidy cut itself is covered under halving, and the revenue metric these hedges target under hashprice.
