Plenum

A plenum is a sealed, pressurized air space used to distribute or collect air across a cooling system. In data centers and Hashcenters it most often means the cavity beneath a raised access floor, but the term covers any enclosed air chamber held at a pressure different from the room — including an overhead ceiling void used to return hot exhaust to the cooling units, or the supply box behind a wall of miners. The defining idea is buffering: a plenum decouples the machines that move air from the equipment that consumes it, so dozens of intakes can draw from one common, evenly pressurized reservoir instead of each fan fighting for its own supply.

The raised-floor supply plenum

In the classic raised-floor design, cooling units pressurize the under-floor void with cold air. Perforated tiles placed in front of equipment intakes let that pressurized air rise into the cold aisle, where servers or ASICs draw it through. The floor becomes a distribution manifold you can re-plumb by hand: swap a solid tile for a perforated one and you have redirected supply to a new row without touching a duct. Operators tune the layout by controlling which tiles are open and how much static pressure the plenum holds — too little pressure starves the far tiles; leaks, cable cutouts, and missing blanking panels bleed pressure and create hot spots. Depth matters too: a shallow or congested under-floor space chokes flow exactly where cabling is thickest.

Return plenums and containment

A ceiling plenum runs the same trick in reverse: hot exhaust rises through grilles or chimneys into the overhead void and is ducted back to the cooling coils, usually paired with hot aisle / cold aisle discipline and hard air containment so supply and return streams never mix. Keeping the two paths separated is most of the game in air cooling — every watt of recirculated exhaust is a watt the cooling plant pays for twice.

Plenums also carry a code obligation worth knowing: because they circulate the air people ultimately breathe, cabling routed through them must generally be plenum-rated, jacketed to resist burning and to emit less toxic smoke. And a plenum should be measured, not guessed — a simple differential manometer reading between plenum and room, checked at the near and far ends, tells you immediately whether pressure is uniform or bleeding away through unsealed penetrations.

Note the sign convention: supply plenums run at positive pressure relative to the room, return plenums at negative, and the fan energy needed to hold either rises with every filter, grille, and kink in the path — which is why plenum design and fan sizing are one calculation, not two. Immersion cooling sidesteps the entire discipline by replacing air with liquid, which is much of its appeal at extreme density.

Plenums in Bitcoin mining

Many high-density mining buildings skip raised floors entirely in favour of direct front-to-back wall ducting — but they have not abandoned the plenum, they have enlarged it. A typical warehouse-style Hashcenter turns the whole cold side of the building into a supply plenum fed through filtered intake walls (often with an air-side economizer doing the cooling for free), and the sealed hot corridor behind the miners into a return plenum exhausted through the roof or gable fans. ASICs are demanding tenants: a modern unit pulls a large volume of air, and hundreds of them need thousands of CFM delivered at nearly uniform pressure so the machines at the end of the row are not starved. When a fleet shows scattered overheating on one wall, the diagnosis is usually not the miners — it is a leaky, under-pressurized, or short-circuiting plenum. Seal it, pressurize it, and measure it; the plenum only works if it holds pressure.
