Definition

Hot aisle / cold aisle is the foundational airflow layout for any air-cooled Hashcenter or data center. Rows of ASIC miners or servers are arranged so that equipment intakes all face one shared aisle (the cold aisle) while their exhausts face the opposite aisle (the hot aisle). The goal is simple: keep the cold supply air and the hot exhaust air physically separated so hot air is never re-ingested by the next machine downstream.

Why separation matters

An ASIC miner's hashrate, efficiency, and chip lifespan all depend on intake temperature. If hot exhaust recirculates back into an intake, that miner runs hotter than the facility setpoint suggests, throttling hashrate and accelerating fan and hashboard wear. By orienting every row consistently, the layout prevents this recirculation and lets operators run higher, more efficient supply-air setpoints without cooking the back rows.

From layout to containment

Hot aisle / cold aisle is a discipline of orientation, not a physical barrier on its own. Gaps over racks and around row ends still let hot and cold air leak together. Sealing those leakage paths is the job of air containment, and unfilled rack slots are closed with blanking panels. ASHRAE's TC 9.9 thermal guidelines recommend keeping equipment intake air at or below 27 C (80.6 F), which a well-managed aisle scheme makes achievable with minimal mechanical cooling.
