Definition
Hot tweezers are a soldering tool with two independently heated, tweezer-style tips that close on a small surface-mount component and melt the solder at both terminals simultaneously. This lets a technician lift a resistor, capacitor, diode, or other two-terminal part off the board in one controlled motion, without the seesawing required when alternating a single iron between two pads.
Why two heated tips matter
Surface-mount components are soldered at both ends, so to remove one cleanly both joints must be molten at the same instant. A single iron forces you to rock the part back and forth, risking lifted pads and damage to neighbors. Hot tweezers apply balanced heat to both ends, so the part releases the moment the solder flows. The same tool places replacements with equal control.
On the ASIC repair bench
Bitcoin miner hashboards are crowded with small passives around the power and clock paths. When a shorted decoupling capacitor or an open sense resistor is found, hot tweezers remove it without disturbing the dense cluster around it. A drop of flux improves heat transfer and wetting, and a stereo microscope keeps the work in view.
For larger or multi-pin parts a technician switches to a hot air rework station, but for the thousands of tiny two-terminal components on a board, hot tweezers are the fastest, safest option on the bench.
