Steel Seed Backup

A steel seed backup is a recovery seed recorded on a durable metal medium, typically stainless steel or titanium, rather than on paper. The aim is permanence: paper burns, soaks, fades, and tears, but a properly made metal backup is designed to survive house fires, flooding, corrosion, and decades of time. For anyone self-custodying meaningful value, the seed phrase backup is the true root of recovery, the wallet and even the hardware signer are replaceable, the seed is not, and steel hardens that root against physical disaster.

Why metal over paper

Bitcoin seed phrases are recoverable only if the backup itself survives. House fires commonly reach temperatures that destroy paper and many plastics outright, while stainless steel and titanium retain stamped or engraved markings well beyond those thresholds; a deep stamp survives conditions that reduce ink and laminate to ash. Metal also shrugs off water damage, and the slow chemical decay that fades ink over decades simply does not apply to a physical indentation. The result is a backup whose expected lifespan is measured in decades or longer, decoupling your recovery from the fragility of your storage medium. One honest caveat: solder-based or low-melting-point products vary in quality, so favour designs where the seed survives as deformation of solid steel rather than as attached parts that can shake loose or melt.

Approaches and pitfalls

Common formats include letter tiles you arrange into slots inside a bolted casing, center-punch dot grids where you mark coordinates on a plate, and hand-stamped plates using letter punches on blank stock, a perfectly good budget option. A useful shortcut: BIP39 words are uniquely identified by their first four letters, so most systems only record those, which keeps stamping manageable. Whatever the method, the recording must be legible and unambiguous, a smudged or miscounted character can render a backup useless precisely when it is needed. The non-negotiable step is verification: restore a wallet from the metal backup itself, not from memory, before trusting it. Test it the way a miner load-tests a repaired PSU before racking it, because the failure you did not test for is the one that finds you.

Security is not secrecy

Remember what steel does and does not protect. It defends against fire, flood, and time, not against discovery: anyone who finds a plaintext steel plate holds your keys. Placement therefore matters as much as material, and a passphrase (the so-called 25th word), stored separately, keeps a discovered plate from being sufficient on its own. Store plates where a single event, one fire, one flood, one burglary, cannot reach everything at once.

Layering with other techniques

Each Seed XOR part or Shamir share can live on its own steel plate in a separate location, so no single disaster or theft ever reaches the threshold needed to reconstruct your keys. For multisig arrangements, each cosigner seed gets its own plate and its own geography. This is self-custody in its most physical form: no vendor, no subscription, no counterparty, just metallurgy standing between your keys and entropy. A few dollars of steel and an afternoon of careful stamping buy a guarantee that nothing in the digital world can offer.

Finally, write down the recovery story for the people who might need it without you. A steel plate is only as useful as the instructions around it: which wallet standard, whether a passphrase exists, how shares combine, and who should be contacted. That documentation should never contain the seed itself, but it should let a competent heir or executor turn plates into funds without guesswork. Durable metal solves the decades problem for the words; a clear, tested recovery plan solves it for the humans.
