Spook

Table of Contents

Like ghosts in the mind, a “spook” is anything that a group of people, society, mainstream media, or influencers will lead you to believe is real, but it’s not – fundamentally, an illusion.

For example, often on social media you’ll see a concept repeated so often on your news feed that you might start to believe it’s real, even though the reality is that it’s not real.

Influencers, moonboys, and even some FUD pieces can be or create spook because they are there to drive attention and engagement by dividing opinion online between the real and unreal things.

The phrase originates from Max Stirner, who was a 19th century German philosopher, but has since been suitably meme-ified in the 21st century.
