Definition
Blockstream Jade is a hardware wallet produced by Blockstream for securing Bitcoin and Liquid assets. It signs transactions on-device and can communicate with companion software over USB, Bluetooth, or QR codes depending on the workflow, allowing it to be used in connected or air-gapped configurations. Blockstream also offers Jade Plus, a later model with revised hardware.
Open-source status
Jade is notable for publishing its firmware, hardware design files, and companion application code as open source on GitHub. Rather than relying on a conventional dedicated secure element to protect the seed, Jade offers a security model built around what Blockstream calls a blind oracle, an external server that holds part of the decryption process so the encrypted wallet cannot be unlocked from the device alone. Because no proprietary secure-element chip is required, the full hardware and software stack can remain openly auditable; users who prefer not to rely on the oracle can also run Jade in a stateless mode where the seed is entered each session.
Companion software
Jade pairs with Blockstream's Green wallet and is also compatible with third-party coordinators such as Sparrow and Specter, exchanging PSBT data for single-signature and multisig use.
