Definition
Trezor is a line of hardware wallets made by SatoshiLabs, a company founded in Prague. The original Trezor Model One, released in 2014, is widely credited as the first commercial Bitcoin hardware wallet. Trezor devices store private keys offline and require physical confirmation on the device's screen and buttons (or touchscreen, depending on the model) before any transaction is signed, even when connected to a computer over USB.
Open-source status
SatoshiLabs has long emphasized an open-source approach, publishing both firmware and hardware design so that the code can be audited and the designs reproduced by the community. Earlier Trezor models deliberately avoided a closed secure-element chip in favor of fully auditable general-purpose hardware. The later Trezor Safe family adds a dedicated secure element; with the Trezor Safe 7, SatoshiLabs introduced the TROPIC01, which it describes as a transparent, auditable secure element intended to combine physical hardening with open inspectability.
Ecosystem
Trezor devices pair with the Trezor Suite application and are also compatible with third-party wallets. They support passphrases, Shamir backup on some models, and a broad range of assets beyond Bitcoin on the multi-asset editions.
