Description

Bitaxe Argon THRML Noctua Socket — Dead-Silent Cooling for Your Bitaxe

Noctua fans are the gold standard for silent computing, and now you can mount one directly to your Bitaxe. The Argon THRML Noctua Socket combines D-Central’s Argon THRML thermal interface with a mounting system designed specifically for Noctua’s 40mm fan lineup. The result is a Bitaxe that runs cool and quiet enough to sit on your desk, in your living room, or anywhere silence matters.

If you have been tolerating fan whine from your Bitaxe or running it without active cooling to avoid the noise, this socket solves both problems. Proper Noctua mounting plus superior thermal contact means lower temps at lower RPMs — the best of both worlds.

Specifications

Spec Detail
Type Thermal interface socket with Noctua fan mount
Thermal Solution Argon THRML compound
Fan Compatibility Noctua 40mm fans (NF-A4x10, NF-A4x20, and similar)
Mounting Direct PCB mount — Noctua fan attaches to socket
Fitment Standard Bitaxe single-chip PCB layout
Installation Tool-free socket mount + Noctua fan hardware

Note: Noctua fan sold separately. Socket includes all mounting hardware needed to attach a Noctua 40mm fan.

Why Noctua on a Bitaxe

The stock fans bundled with most Bitaxe builds are functional but loud. Noctua fans are engineered for maximum airflow at minimum noise — their NF-A4x10 pushes meaningful air at just 17.9 dB(A), which is effectively inaudible in a normal room. For a miner that runs 24/7/365, that matters.

  • Near-silent operation — Noctua’s SSO2 bearing and aerodynamic design keep noise below ambient room levels
  • Premium build quality — rated for 150,000+ hours MTBF (over 17 years of continuous operation)
  • Optimized airflow — purpose-designed impeller geometry moves more air per RPM than generic fans
  • Vibration dampening — anti-vibration mounts reduce structure-borne noise transfer to zero

Argon THRML Thermal Interface

The socket itself uses the same Argon THRML thermal solution as our standard socket, providing:

  • Improved thermal contact over standard thermal pads — eliminates micro air gaps
  • Consistent clamping pressure across the full ASIC die surface
  • Reusable design — swap fans or heatsinks without replacing thermal interface material
  • Overclocking headroom — lower junction temps at lower noise levels

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Noctua fan included?

No. The socket includes all the mounting hardware you need to attach a Noctua 40mm fan, but the fan itself is sold separately. We recommend the Noctua NF-A4x10 (10mm profile, ultra-slim) or NF-A4x20 (20mm profile, more airflow) depending on your clearance and cooling needs.

How does this compare to the standard Argon THRML Socket?

Both sockets use the same Argon THRML thermal interface. The difference is the mounting system: the standard socket is designed for heatsink-only setups (passive or with generic fans), while this Noctua Socket has purpose-built mounting points for Noctua’s 40mm fan hole pattern. If you want to run a Noctua fan, get this socket. If you are using a heatsink with its own fan or running passive, get the standard version.

Can I still use a heatsink with this socket?

The Noctua Socket is designed as a direct fan-over-chip solution — the Noctua fan blows air directly onto the ASIC through the thermal interface. You do not stack a separate heatsink on top. This is a different cooling approach than heatsink-based solutions and can be equally effective at lower noise levels.

How quiet is it compared to the stock fan?

Significantly quieter. A Noctua NF-A4x10 runs at 17.9 dB(A) — that is quieter than most rooms at night. Stock Bitaxe fans typically run at 25-35 dB(A) depending on RPM. The difference is immediately noticeable, especially in a bedroom or office setup.

Will this help with overclocking?

Yes. The Argon THRML thermal interface provides better heat transfer than stock pads, and Noctua fans deliver consistent airflow without the RPM spikes of cheaper fans. The combination gives you stable thermals for pushing frequencies higher with confidence.

Why D-Central

D-Central has been building Bitaxe accessories since the beginning of the open-source mining movement. We created the original Bitaxe Mesh Stand, developed the first dedicated Bitaxe and Bitaxe Hex heatsinks, and ship to solo miners across North America and beyond. The Noctua Socket exists because we run Bitaxes in our own homes and offices — and we got tired of the noise too. Every hash counts, and they should not keep you awake at night.
