How to Upgrade E3 Firmware via SD Card

Table of Contents

While we generally recommend customers to upgrade or reload their firmware using the web, you can also use the SD card method to upgrade the firmware for your E3 miner.

IMPORTANT: The SD card upgrade method is specifically suitable for the E3 miner. Do not attempt to use this method on other miners as it could potentially damage them.

Here are the items you’ll need to prepare:

  1. A micro-SD card (recommended capacity: 4 GB or 8 GB). Larger capacity micro-SD cards are not recommended as they may be more prone to errors.
  2. A PC with a Windows operating system (XP or later) and a card reader that supports micro-SD cards.
  3. E3 firmware. You can download the firmware here.

Choose the firmware file named “E3-SD-20180806-pool.zip” as shown below:

  1. Remove the control board from the miner. For instructions on how to disassemble the miner, refer to this guide: How to disassemble miner.
  2. Shift the JP4 jumper to the right on the control board as depicted in the figure below:
  3. Format the micro-SD card to FAT32 using your PC.
  4. Unzip the downloaded firmware and copy its contents to the micro-SD card.
  5. Remove the card from your PC and insert the micro-SD card into the SD card slot on the control board.
  6. Power on the control board with the PSU. At this point, don’t put the control board back into the miner or connect any hash boards to the control board.Allow at least 90 seconds for the files to load automatically. When the files have loaded, the red and green indicator lights on the control board will start to blink.
  7. Power off the control board and shift the JP4 jumper back to its original position (to the left). Remove the micro-SD card.
  8. Reinstall the control board into the miner and run the miner as you normally would.

If you encounter difficulties (e.g., the miner won’t power on because the firmware didn’t load properly onto the control board, or the firmware is still the old version), try repeating the process a few more times.
