Description
Why the NerdAxe — The 500 GH/s NerdMiner Upgrade
The NerdAxe is the natural next step for NerdMiner owners who want real ASIC mining power. Built around a genuine BM1366 chip — the same 5nm silicon found in the Antminer S19 XP — the NerdAxe delivers 500 GH/s of SHA-256 hashrate at just 12W. D-Central has been a pioneer in the OSMU ecosystem since the beginning, and our ASIC repair team has serviced 2,500+ mining machines since 2016.
- From 78 kH/s to 500 GH/s — Nearly 9 Million Times More Hashpower — The NerdAxe takes the beloved NerdMiner platform and adds a real BM1366 ASIC chip — the same silicon that powers the Antminer S19 XP. The result: a nearly 9-million-fold increase in hashrate. If you own a NerdMiner, the NerdAxe Expansion Kit plugs right in and transforms your desk gadget into a genuine solo miner.
- Two Ways to Get Started — Choose the Expansion Kit (board only) if you already own a NerdMiner and want to upgrade your existing device. Or grab the Full Kit with the Lilygo NerdMiner screen included for a complete, plug-and-play solo mining setup right out of the box.
- Real ASIC, Real Mining — Unlike CPU-based miners, the NerdAxe runs a dedicated BM1366 ASIC chip purpose-built for SHA-256 hashing. At 500 GH/s, you are submitting vastly more shares to the Bitcoin network — and every share is a real shot at the 3.125 BTC block reward.
- Bridge Between Two Worlds — The NerdAxe sits at the intersection of the NerdMiner community and the Bitaxe ecosystem. It runs AxeOS firmware (same as the Bitaxe), uses the same case and cooling accessories, and speaks the same language. It is the natural path from NerdMiner hobbyist to serious open-source miner.
- Open Source Under GNU v3.0 — Fully open-source hardware and firmware, licensed under GNU General Public License v3.0. All schematics, PCB layouts, and firmware source code are publicly available on GitHub. Built by the community, for the community.

| Best For | NerdMiner owners upgrading, display enthusiasts | Maximum hashrate per dollar |
Choose the NerdAxe if you already own a NerdMiner and want to upgrade in-place, or if you prefer the larger color display. Choose the Bitaxe Gamma if raw hashrate is your priority — it delivers roughly 2x the hashing power from a newer, more efficient chip.
Both run AxeOS, both use the same case and cooling accessories, and D-Central carries both. There is no wrong answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the NerdAxe?
The NerdAxe is an open-source Bitcoin ASIC miner built on the NerdMiner platform. It adds a real BM1366 ASIC chip (the same silicon found in the Antminer S19 XP) to deliver 500 GH/s of SHA-256 hashrate. Available as an Expansion Kit (upgrade your existing NerdMiner) or a Full Kit (complete ready-to-mine setup). It is part of the OSMU (Open Source Miners United) ecosystem.
What is the difference between the Expansion Kit and the Full Kit?
The Expansion Kit includes just the NerdAxe ASIC board — designed for existing NerdMiner owners. Your NerdMiner screen becomes the display for the NerdAxe. The Full Kit includes the ASIC board plus the Lilygo NerdMiner color screen, a case, and pre-installed firmware. If you do not already own a NerdMiner, get the Full Kit.
What power supply do I need?
The NerdAxe requires a 5V/6A (30W) power supply with the correct connector. D-Central offers compatible power adapters as an add-on during checkout (North America and Europe options available). Using an underpowered supply may cause instability or lower hashrate. Never use a 12V supply on the NerdAxe.
How does the NerdAxe compare to the NerdMiner?
The NerdMiner uses an ESP32 processor for CPU-based mining at ~78 kH/s. The NerdAxe adds a real BM1366 ASIC chip, boosting hashrate to 500 GH/s — nearly 9 million times more powerful. The NerdMiner is an educational device and desk display. The NerdAxe is a genuine solo mining machine. The Expansion Kit lets you upgrade without replacing your NerdMiner.
What are the odds of finding a Bitcoin block?
At 500 GH/s against the current network hashrate (~700+ EH/s), your daily odds are roughly 1 in 1.4 million. That is long odds — but each block found pays the full 3.125 BTC reward. Running the NerdAxe for a year gives you a cumulative probability of roughly 0.026%. It is a lottery — but the ticket costs about $1-2/month in electricity, and every hash you submit supports Bitcoin decentralization.
Is the NerdAxe profitable?
In the traditional sense of daily returns, no. At 500 GH/s with solo mining, you earn nothing unless you find a full block. In pool mining mode, daily earnings would be a few cents. The NerdAxe is best understood as: (1) an extremely cheap lottery ticket for 3.125 BTC, (2) a hands-on learning tool, (3) a contribution to mining decentralization, and (4) the upgraded mining platform for the NerdMiner community. It costs about $1-2/month to run.
Which mining pool should I use?
For solo mining (recommended): Solo CKPool (solo.ckpool.org) charges a 2% fee but has the strongest infrastructure and the most confirmed block finds. Public Pool (web.public-pool.io) is free and open-source. Both are excellent choices. For pool mining with regular (tiny) payouts, Ocean and Braiins are popular options.
What does the display show?
The Lilygo NerdMiner color screen (included in the Full Kit or from your existing NerdMiner) displays: current hashrate, shares submitted, best difficulty share, Bitcoin price, block height, network difficulty, WiFi status, and ASIC temperature. It is a fully functional Bitcoin dashboard.
What does « GNU v3.0 License » mean?
The NerdAxe uses the GNU General Public License v3.0, meaning the hardware designs and firmware are fully open source. Anyone can view, modify, and redistribute the designs — but any derivative work must also be open-sourced under the same license. This ensures the project stays open and community-driven. (Note: the Bitaxe uses the more permissive MIT license, which does not require derivatives to be open source.)
Can I use NerdAxe accessories with the Bitaxe?
Yes. The NerdAxe Full Kit uses the same case form factor and cooling ecosystem as the Bitaxe. Cases, heatsinks, fans, and power supplies are cross-compatible. Browse all compatible accessories in our Bitaxe Accessories collection.
Can I buy a NerdAxe in Canada?
Yes. D-Central Technologies is based in Laval, Quebec and ships NerdAxe kits across Canada with fast domestic shipping, CAD pricing, and bilingual support (English and French). No cross-border customs, no surprise duties. Browse the D-Central shop for the NerdAxe Expansion Kit and Full Kit.
What if my NerdAxe needs repair?
D-Central’s ASIC repair team has serviced 2,500+ mining machines since 2016 — including the BM1366 chips inside the NerdAxe. If your NerdAxe develops any hardware issue, our technicians in Laval, Quebec can diagnose and repair it. We support everything we sell, from NerdMiners to full industrial ASICs.
Supporting Open-Source Mining
The NerdAxe is built by the OSMU (Open Source Miners United) community — the same group behind the NerdMiner, Bitaxe, NerdQAxe, and the growing family of open-source Bitcoin mining hardware. $10 from every NerdAxe sale goes directly to OSMU to fund continued open-source development.
The NerdAxe is licensed under GNU General Public License v3.0. All hardware schematics, firmware source code, and design files are publicly available. This is mining hardware you can trust, verify, and modify.
D-Central has been part of the OSMU ecosystem since its earliest days — creating the original Bitaxe Mesh Stand, developing custom heatsinks, and building the Modern Minibit Gamma. We do not just sell these devices. We help build this ecosystem.
Every hash counts. 500 GH/s from your desk is 500 GH/s that does not belong to a mega-farm. That is the point. That is why open-source mining matters.
