Definition

An any-to-any model is a multimodal system designed to both understand and generate across an arbitrary set of modalities within a single architecture. Where a typical vision-language model only reads images and writes text, an any-to-any model can go text-to-image, image-to-audio, video-to-text, or speech-to-music, unifying many modality-specific encoders and decoders behind one shared core.

How unification is achieved

These systems pair modality encoders that lift each input into a common representation with modality decoders that render outputs back into pixels, waveforms, or tokens. Some, like Anole and other autoregressive unified models, generate everything as a single token stream; others, such as rectified-flow approaches like OmniFlow, use generative flows to move between modalities. The shared central representation, built on strong multimodal alignment, is what lets one model serve combinations it was never explicitly trained on pair-by-pair.

Why it matters for sovereignty

A single open any-to-any model running locally can replace a stack of separate cloud services for transcription, image generation, captioning, and more. That consolidation reduces external dependencies and keeps potentially sensitive media on hardware the operator controls. The trade-off is size and complexity: unifying many decoders raises memory and serving demands, which is an active focus of disaggregated-serving research.

Any-to-any designs rely on multimodal alignment across modalities and frequently produce interleaved image-text output rather than a single fixed format.
