AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network) is open-source firmware, based on OpenWrt, that converts inexpensive commercial WiFi routers and radios into nodes of a self-configuring amateur-radio mesh network. Operated under amateur (ham) radio licensing, AREDN lets licensed operators stand up high-throughput data networks that run entirely independent of internet and cellular infrastructure — exactly the kind of fallback a sovereignty-minded operator wants when commercial links fail. Where hobbyist LoRa meshes move short text messages, an AREDN mesh moves real IP traffic: video feeds, VoIP calls, file servers, and web applications, at speeds that feel like ordinary networking.

How the mesh forms

AREDN nodes discover each other and build routes automatically; the mesh is fault-tolerant and self-healing, so nodes can join or drop without manual reconfiguration. Recent production releases retired the legacy OLSR protocol in favor of Babel routing, and the large majority of nodes worldwide now run Babel-based firmware. Because hams may run higher power and high-gain directional antennas in their allocations near the 2.4 GHz, 3.4 GHz, and 5.8 GHz bands — privileges unlicensed ISM-band users do not get — reliable point-to-point links can span many miles, limited mainly by terrain and the radio horizon. Good link budget discipline and elevation do the rest: hilltop and tower nodes form the backbone, sector antennas fan coverage into valleys, and short-range nodes hang off the edges.

Hardware and installation

AREDN supports common carrier-grade gear from vendors such as Ubiquiti, MikroTik, and TP-Link — much of it available used for modest money — installed via TFTP for new devices or a sysupgrade image for those already running AREDN. A node is typically a weatherproof radio/antenna unit on a mast, powered over ethernet. Behind it, ordinary IP services plug in: a Raspberry Pi web server, an IP camera, a VoIP phone. The barrier to entry is the amateur license itself, which in most countries requires passing a technical exam — a worthwhile credential for any off-grid communicator, and the gateway to far more spectrum privileges than mesh networking alone.

Why operators run it — and the encryption caveat

AREDN is widely used for emergency communications, linking hospitals, emergency operations centers, and served agencies when infrastructure fails. But the same properties — no provider, no monthly bill, no kill switch — make it valuable for routine off-grid data, file transfer, and reaching remote sites such as an outbuilding, a repeater hut, or a rural property. One caveat is non-negotiable: amateur-band regulations forbid encryption of message content and any commercial or pecuniary traffic. AREDN is about resilient reach, not privacy or commerce — so it is a transport for open coordination, not for wallet traffic or business data. Sensitive payloads belong on other layers of your stack.

In a layered communications plan, AREDN occupies the high-bandwidth regional tier: above Meshtastic/LoRa text meshes, below satellite and the internet itself. It grew out of the same lineage as Broadband-Hamnet (HSMM-Mesh) and pairs well with longer-range packet radio links for store-and-forward traffic beyond the mesh's edge.
