Definition

A bull market is a sustained period of rising asset prices accompanied by broad optimism among participants. A common rule of thumb, borrowed from traditional equities, defines a bull market as a rise of 20% or more from recent lows that persists for a meaningful stretch of time rather than a brief spike. The term is named for the way a bull attacks by thrusting its horns upward.

Characteristics

In traditional markets, bull phases often coincide with strong economic indicators such as low unemployment and rising output, and with high investor confidence. In cryptocurrency, bull markets are frequently associated with rising trading volumes, increased media attention, and growing retail participation. These conditions can amplify each other, as rising prices attract new buyers whose demand pushes prices higher still.
