Distributed Compute

Definition

Distributed Compute is the practice of splitting computational tasks — model inference, data processing, simulation, or hash computation — across multiple machines or nodes rather than executing them on a single device. Each node contributes a portion of the work; results are aggregated. Distributed compute and decentralized computing are related but distinct: distributed describes the architecture (many machines sharing a task), while decentralized adds the property that no single party controls those machines.

Bitcoin mining as distributed compute

A Bitcoin mining pool is a textbook distributed compute system: thousands of ASIC miners each search a different portion of the nonce space, submit shares to a pool coordinator, and receive proportional payment when the pool finds a valid block. The individual miner does not need to solve a block alone; the pool aggregates their hashrate.

Beyond mining

Distributed compute extends to AI inference (partitioning a large model across multiple GPUs or edge devices), scientific simulation (SETI@home, Folding@home), rendering pipelines, and data analytics. For Canadian operators building sovereign infrastructure, distributing compute across facilities in different provinces provides both added capacity and geographic resilience. D-Central's distributed compute hub and open data API are designed to serve operators who want to participate in distributed compute without cloud lock-in.
