Grid Mix

Economics & Profitability

Definition

Grid mix is the combination of generation sources supplying electricity to a given grid at a given time: hydro, natural gas, coal, nuclear, wind, and solar in varying proportions. Because the grid blends all of these into one indistinguishable supply, the mix determines the carbon intensity—grams of CO2 equivalent per kilowatt-hour—of every unit of energy a facility draws. For a Hashcenter, the local grid mix is the single biggest factor in both the cost and the carbon story of mined bitcoin.

Why the mix varies

Generation sources differ sharply by region. Much of Canada—Quebec, British Columbia, Manitoba—runs on abundant hydroelectricity, giving a very low carbon intensity, while grids leaning on coal or gas carry a far heavier footprint. The mix also shifts hour to hour: wind and solar are intermittent, so a grid that is clean at midday can fall back to fossil peakers at night. Carbon-aware operators watch these swings to schedule flexible loads when the grid is cleanest.

Grid mix and Bitcoin mining

Miners are uniquely mobile loads. They can colocate with stranded hydro, flared gas, or curtailed wind that would otherwise be wasted, effectively monetizing energy with no better buyer. This is why a thoughtful Hashcenter treats grid mix as a siting decision, not an afterthought: the same machine is profitable and low-carbon behind a hydro dam and marginal behind a coal plant. Choosing favorable generation is more honest than buying paper to cover an unfavorable mix.

When physical clean siting is not possible, operators may layer Renewable Energy Certificates on top of their measured mix, though the stronger claim is always to mine where the electrons are already clean.
