Hydro Cooling

Hardware

Definition

Hydro cooling (water cooling) removes heat from an ASIC miner by running coolant — typically deionized water or a water-glycol mix — through sealed internal channels and cold plates pressed against the hot components. Unlike immersion cooling, the machine is never submerged: the fluid is contained inside the loop, so it can stay in a standard rack form factor while a dedicated factory-built hydro miner replaces the fans with a closed liquid path. Heat picked up by the coolant is dumped through an external radiator or dry cooler.

Hydro vs. immersion

Both are liquid-cooling approaches, but they differ in coolant and contact. Hydro uses inexpensive water/glycol confined to tubing and cold plates and needs far less fluid volume per machine, enabling very dense, rack-style deployments. Immersion bathes the whole device in a pricier dielectric fluid. Bitmain ships hydro versions of its flagships (the S19 Hydro and S21 Hydro/XP Hydro lines) precisely because liquid lets those boards run hotter power levels safely.

Trade-offs to plan for

Hydro delivers excellent, even cooling and quiet operation and supports overclocking, but it introduces plumbing, pumps, and leak-management that air-cooled fleets don't have — deionized water must be maintained to stay non-conductive, and the loop is a maintenance item. The payoff is lower cooling energy and longer hardware life.
