It is developed and maintained by OffSec (Offensive Security) and ships with several hundred preinstalled tools for tasks such as network scanning, vulnerability assessment, wireless analysis, and reverse engineering. Its development tree is public, and packages are GPG-signed.
What it includes
Rather than being a general-purpose desktop OS, Kali is a curated toolkit. It bundles well-known security utilities, a kernel patched for wireless packet injection, and configurations tuned for assessment work. It runs across many platforms, including ARM devices like the Raspberry Pi, virtual machines, containers, and cloud images, so testers can deploy a consistent environment wherever they work.
