Surveillance Capitalism

Digital Sovereignty

Definition

Surveillance capitalism is a term coined by Harvard professor Shoshana Zuboff to describe an economic logic that, in her words, "unilaterally claims human experience as free raw material for translation into behavioral data." That data is processed into prediction products and sold into "behavioral futures markets" to customers who profit from knowing, and increasingly nudging, what you will do next. It is the business model behind most "free" online services: you are not the customer, you are the supply.

How the model works

Zuboff argues that firms first discovered they could capture a behavioral surplus, the data exhaust from your searches, clicks, locations, and social connections, far beyond what was needed to provide the service. That surplus is refined into predictions of future behavior and auctioned to advertisers and other interested parties. Over time, the most valuable predictions come not from passively observing behavior but from shaping it, which is why Zuboff warns the model erodes individual autonomy and, ultimately, democratic self-determination.

Why Bitcoiners care

A sovereign Bitcoiner treats this as a direct adversary. The same surplus-extraction logic links wallet activity to identity, profiles your purchases, and feeds the data-broker economy. Resisting it is why financial privacy, self-hosting, and tools that minimize the data you emit matter; they shrink the raw material available for translation into behavioral data in the first place. The defensive posture is to assume that any convenience offered for free is being paid for in surveillance.

Surveillance capitalism is fueled by the data broker industry and by the metadata trail your devices emit, both of which a privacy-conscious setup deliberately starves.
