Flared gas mining is the practice of siting Bitcoin miners directly on an oil-and-gas well pad and powering them with associated gas—the natural gas that comes up alongside crude oil. When a well has no pipeline connection or no economic market for that gas, operators have historically burned it off at a flare stack. Flared gas mining intercepts the gas upstream of the flare, runs it through a generator, and uses the resulting electricity to run hashing hardware instead of releasing the energy as waste heat.
How a flare-mitigation site works
Raw wellhead gas is first conditioned to remove water and impurities so it burns cleanly in an engine. A reciprocating natural-gas generator (genset) then converts the fuel into electricity, which feeds a containerized data center on the pad. The whole system runs off-grid, with no connection to the wholesale power market—the load is co-located with the fuel. Pioneered around 2017 by operators such as Upstream Data, and scaled by firms like Crusoe Energy, the model lets producers monetize gas that has no other buyer.
The methane angle
Proponents argue that combusting the gas in an enclosed engine destroys methane more completely than an open flare, which can leave unburned methane—a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO₂. Crusoe has cited engine combustion efficiency near 99.9% versus roughly 93% for typical flaring. Critics note the carbon accounting is contested: replacing an existing flare mostly shifts where the CO₂ is produced rather than eliminating it.
