Generator (Genset)

Home Mining

Definition

A generator set, or genset, is a self-contained package that pairs a fuel-burning engine with an electrical alternator to produce on-site power. A typical natural-gas genset combines a reciprocating internal-combustion engine, the alternator, controls, and the supporting cooling, lubrication, exhaust, and fuel systems into one skid- or trailer-mounted unit. In Bitcoin mining it is the device that turns stranded fuel—gas at a wellhead, biogas at a landfill—into the electricity that runs hashing hardware.

Why gensets dominate off-grid mining

Most off-grid mining runs on gensets because they go where the fuel is. Rather than build miles of pipeline or transmission line to move energy to market, the operator drops a generator and a container of miners next to the source. Crypto-mining gensets commonly range from a few hundred kilowatts to several megawatts, sized to the rig count, cooling load, and redundancy the site needs.

Fuel and trade-offs

Natural gas is the usual choice for continuous off-grid operation: it is cleaner and quieter than diesel and cheaper to run, especially when the gas is essentially free associated gas. Diesel gensets tend to be reserved for backup or short-term remote deployments. Running an engine 24/7 demands real maintenance discipline—oil changes, spark plugs, and overhauls—which becomes part of the true cost of flared gas mining.

For D-Central, the genset is where energy strategy meets mechanical reality. See related entries on flared gas mining and combined heat and power.
