NEMA 14-50 Receptacle

Home Mining

Definition

The NEMA 14-50 is a high-capacity North American receptacle rated 125/250V at 50 amps, with four contacts: two hot conductors, a neutral, and a ground. It is the standard outlet for electric ranges and is now ubiquitous as a Level 2 EV charging outlet, which has made it cheap, well-understood, and easy to have installed by an electrician.

A practical home-mining backbone

Because it carries a neutral as well as both hots, a 14-50 can supply 240V to heavy loads and 120V where needed. A 50A circuit at 240V is nominally 12,000W, with a continuous-rated ceiling near 9,600W. That is enough to feed two to three ASICs (through a sub-distribution or a PDU) rather than a single device, making the 14-50 a popular feed point for a small mining bench or a converted EV-charger circuit.

Wiring and adapters

A 14-50 requires a 50A double-pole breaker and typically 6 AWG copper. Miners rarely plug into it directly; instead the 14-50 feeds a power distribution unit or a panel that breaks the capacity into appropriately fused branch circuits for each machine. Beware cheap adapters that split a 14-50 into multiple smaller outlets without per-branch overcurrent protection, which can defeat the circuit's safety margins.

Neutral caution

The older three-wire NEMA 10-50 lacks a separate ground and should not be confused with the 14-50; modern code requires the four-wire grounded configuration for new installations.

For lower-capacity 240V single-miner feeds see the NEMA L6-30 receptacle, and for how 240V differs from commercial 208V see 208V vs 240V.
