A factory reset wipes an Antminer’s configuration — pool URLs, worker names, network settings, and the login password — and returns it to the state it shipped in. It does not re-flash the firmware and it does not repair hardware. Use it to recover a miner with a forgotten password, a corrupted config, a stuck web interface, before reselling a unit, or as the first step in clearing a suspected compromise. There are three ways to do it: the control-board reset button, the web interface, and the boot-time IP-Report button on older S9/T9 boards. Pick the one that matches your model below.
Before you start
- A reset erases everything you configured. Record your pool URLs, worker names, static IP, and any custom fan or tuning settings first — you will re-enter them afterward.
- Login returns to the factory default (typically
root/rooton stock Antminer firmware). Change it immediately after the reset — leaving default credentials on a miner reachable from the wider network is the single most common way units get hijacked. - Reset is not reflash. The miner keeps whatever firmware version is already installed. If you are clearing a suspected infection or unknown firmware, a settings reset is not enough — plan to re-flash a fresh official signed image afterward (see below).
- You do not need to open the PSU. These procedures use the control board only. Never open a running power supply: while the low-voltage DC bus feeding the hashboards is harmless, the mains-side filter capacitors hold ~410–420 V and can injure you long after unplugging.
Method 1: Control-board reset button (S17 / S19 / S21 series)
Modern Antminers expose a small physical reset button on the control board, next to the Ethernet and IP-Report buttons. On most of these boards the button is only armed for a short window right after boot.
- Power the miner on and let it fully boot — wait about 2 minutes.
- Press and hold the Reset button for about 5 seconds, then release.
- The miner restores factory settings within roughly 4 minutes and reboots on its own. Do not cut power during this window.
The reset button is only honoured while the unit has been running for roughly 2 to 10 minutes. Miss that window and the button does nothing — power-cycle and try again, or use the web interface instead.
Method 2: Web interface (17 and 19 series)
If the miner still boots and you can reach its dashboard, this is the cleanest route. Find the miner’s IP with your router’s client list or Bitmain’s IP Reporter tool, then browse to it and log in.
17 series
- Log in to the miner’s web interface.
- Open Upgrade, then choose Perform reset (also labelled “Restore factory settings” on some builds).
- Confirm in the pop-up. The miner reboots into its default configuration.
19 series
- Log in to the miner’s web interface.
- Click Restore factory settings (lower-right of the dashboard).
- In the pop-up, confirm Restore factory settings and wait for the reboot.
The S21 series is reset the same way — log in, restore factory settings, confirm. The exact wording moves around between firmware builds; look for “reset” or “restore” under the system or upgrade menu.
Method 3: IP-Report button at boot (S9, T9, T9+)
Older Bitmain control boards have no software reset link. Instead you trigger the restore with the same physical IP-Report button the miner normally uses to announce its address on the network (press it and the miner broadcasts its IP so the IP Reporter tool can catch it). Held down through power-on, that same button forces a factory restore.
- Power the miner off.
- Press and hold the IP-Report button and keep holding it while you power the miner back on.
- Keep holding for about 5 seconds, then release. The board restores factory settings automatically.
This method does not apply to control boards with an SD-card slot to the right of the Ethernet port — those are the newer boards, which reset via the web interface (Method 2). For S9/T9-class units, the board should be on a recent official firmware build before you rely on this button.
After the reset: verify and reconfigure
- Let the miner finish rebooting, then rediscover its IP (router client list or IP Reporter). It will likely be back on DHCP.
- Log in with the factory default credentials and change the password immediately.
- Re-enter your pool URLs and worker names, restore your static IP if you use one, and confirm the unit accepts work and ramps to its expected hashrate.
- Re-flash official firmware if needed. A reset keeps the existing image; if you are recovering from unknown or suspect firmware, download a fresh, signed firmware image from the manufacturer’s own portal and re-flash. Never install firmware from a forum link, a torrent, or an unverified mirror — that is exactly how compromised images spread.
Common mistakes and when a reset won’t help
- Expecting a reset to fix hardware. Dead hashboards, chip-level failures, missing ASICs in the count, or overheating are not configuration problems — a reset changes nothing. Diagnose the board instead.
- Missing the boot window. The Method 1 button is only live for a few minutes after power-on. If nothing happens, you almost certainly waited too long.
- Confusing reset with reflash. If the goal is to remove unknown firmware or a suspected infection, a settings reset alone is not enough — you must re-flash a clean signed image.
- Leaving default credentials. Resetting hands the miner back to
root/root. On a flat network that is an open door. Change it, and keep mining gear on an isolated LAN or VLAN with no direct internet exposure.
