Is Meshtastic legal to use in Montréal and Quebec?
Yes. Meshtastic operates on the 902–928 MHz ISM band, which is licence-exempt in Canada under ISED RSS-247. Hardware purchased from certified vendors (which D-Central supplies) does not require an operator’s radio licence. You do not need an amateur radio licence to use Meshtastic on this band, though licensed amateurs can and do operate on other LoRa bands with additional capabilities. Always verify the current version of RSS-247 with ISED or an RF compliance specialist for your specific configuration.
How far do Meshtastic nodes reach in Montréal’s urban environment?
In Montréal’s dense city core, ground-level to ground-level range is typically 300 m–1.5 km. The two are complementary: our backbone nodes increase coverage for everyone, including community users. We credit and encourage participation in the community projects.
Do I need a rooftop node, or can ground-level nodes work?
For personal use and community contribution, ground-level (balcony, window) nodes are fine and add coverage for nearby users. For reliable multi-building coverage or backbone relay duty, elevation is the single most impactful factor. D-Central recommends rooftop installations whenever the use case demands consistent multi-hundred-metre range. We handle the mechanical and weatherproofing aspects as part of the Backbone Node Installation tier.
Can Meshtastic messages be encrypted?
Yes. Meshtastic supports AES-256 channel encryption for private messaging. By default, the public default channel uses a shared key; a private deployment uses a unique channel key known only to your devices. D-Central configures private channels for all enterprise and business deployments. The encryption applies to message content; device MAC addresses and node positions (if GPS is enabled) may still be visible to other mesh participants unless position sharing is disabled.
