The other direction: a 120 mm fan on a 140 mm mounting. Less about acoustics, more about logistics — 120 mm is the size the world actually stocks, in every speed, bearing type and static-pressure rating you could want.
What it fits
Standard 140 mm mounting pattern on one face, standard 120 mm on the other, with a shaped transition between the apertures. Useful on Whatsminer-class hardware and anything else built around 140 mm fan positions.
Measure before you order. Fit dimensions in this line are derived from published fan and chassis geometry and are not yet validated against measured production hardware. Check your flange size and the clearance around your machine against the footprint in the specifications below. If something does not fit, tell us — that is how the next revision gets better.
How it is used
Fit it where a 140 mm fan lives, mount a 120 mm fan to the outer face. The usual reasons are availability — a 140 mm replacement is not in stock and the machine needs to run today — or specification, because you want a specific high-static-pressure 120 mm fan that has no 140 mm equivalent.
Why it helps
The 120 mm fan market is enormous and the 140 mm market is not. Being able to fall back to 120 mm means a fan failure does not idle a machine while you wait for a part, and it means you can choose from the full range of industrial-grade options rather than whatever the 140 mm shelf happens to hold. Expect to run the smaller fan faster to match the airflow, with the noise that implies.

Frequently asked questions
Will a smaller fan cool as well?
Only if you run it faster, and it will be louder for it. This adapter is about availability and fan choice, not about improving on a 140 mm fan. If quiet is the goal, you want the other direction.
Why would anyone downsize a fan?
Because the 120 mm market is vastly deeper. When a 140 mm fan fails and the replacement is three weeks out, a 120 mm fan from the shelf plus this adapter has the machine hashing tomorrow. Some high-static-pressure industrial 120 mm fans also have no 140 mm counterpart.
Does it seal properly?
The transition is a shaped body rather than a flat plate, so the airflow is guided rather than allowed to spill at the step. As with any adapter, the quality of the seal against your chassis depends on how flat the mating surface is.
