Antminer S19 shroud, 8 inch, wide base: sized for the long run

An Antminer S19 shroud in 8 inch is the one to fit when the duct is going somewhere. Both 120 mm exhaust fans of an S19 or a standard S21 are hooded behind one plenum and merged into a single 8-inch collar — the size to reach for when the run is long, turns more than once, feeds an inline duct fan, or joins a shared plenum. Six inches answers a short hop to a window; over distance, the duct becomes the narrowest part of the system.

The reasoning is plain geometry. An 8-inch bore is 203.2 mm across against 152.4 mm for a 6-inch, and because area goes with the square of diameter, the larger duct carries about 1.78 times the cross-section. You buy that once, at the shroud, and it applies to every metre after it.

Short run, tight rack, or a 6-inch duct already through the wall? Take the plain wide-base 6-inch shroud. Committed to a 250 mm flange across a fleet? The standard-base 8-inch shroud is the same outlet on the narrower plate. Mixing sizes down the run is fine — that is what the 8-inch to 6-inch reducer is for.

How it goes on

  1. Lift the shroud over both exhaust fans so the eight flange slots sit on the fan screw holes.
  2. Fit M4 screws with a 9 mm or larger flat washer under each head, or reuse the miner’s own large-head fan screws. There is 8.02 to 11.37 mm of driver clearance at every hole.
  3. Push 8-inch flex duct over the outside of the collar, past the retention bead, onto the sealing band behind it.
  4. Support the run with a strap or hanger at the first bend, so the flange stops carrying the duct.

Why size up at the machine, not halfway down

Pressure loss in a duct run does not accumulate politely; it stacks up over length and jumps at every turn, and all of it is paid for by the same two fans that are also trying to cool hashboards. Widening the bore at the source means the whole run works at the larger section, and the one size change happens inside a shaped plenum where the fan columns merge rather than at a coupler where two ducts meet end to end.

  • Carries roughly 1.78 times the bore area of a 6-inch collar, from the shroud onward.
  • Merges both fan columns in a shaped plenum before the transition, so the size change happens where a wall can guide it.
  • Matches the nominal size that 8-inch inline duct fans, couplers and window ports are built to.

Frequently asked questions

When is 8-inch the right call over 6-inch?

When the run is long, when it turns more than once, when an inline duct fan is going in it, or when several machines share a plenum. Those are the cases where the duct costs more than the shroud does. For one machine venting through a nearby window, the plain wide-base 6-inch shroud is easier to route.

Does the 8-inch collar need the wider plate?

It benefits from it more than the 6-inch does. An 8-inch flexible duct is heavier and much stiffer to bend, so it pulls harder on the mount. The 260 mm plate bears that across the exhaust face. The standard-base 8-inch shroud is the 250 mm alternative when machine spacing decides it for you.

Can I run 8-inch at the machine and 6-inch through the wall?

Yes, and it is a common compromise when the wall penetration already exists. Put the 8-inch to 6-inch reducer at the wall rather than at the shroud, so the run does most of its distance at the larger section. Reducing early gives away most of what the bigger collar bought you.

Will it take an 8-inch inline fan?

The collar is drawn to the 8-inch nominal size that inline duct fans, couplers and rigid fittings in that class are built around, so a length of 8-inch flex between shroud and fan is the usual connection. The 8-inch duct coupler joins runs, off the same tolerance standard.

Which machines take this flange?

Every chassis with two 120 mm exhaust fans 120.0 mm apart on a 105 mm screw square: the S19 family, the standard S21, the T21. The S21 Pro and S21 XP moved to 140 mm fans and take the S21 Pro dual 140 mm shroud instead.
