120 mm fan silencer shroud to 6-inch duct
This 120 mm fan silencer shroud does two jobs in one body: it takes a single 120 mm exhaust fan into a 6-inch duct, and on the way through it runs the air across a reactive expansion chamber. A plain shroud is a funnel that gets heat out of the room. This one is drawn with a deliberate step in cross-section between the fan face and the collar, and a step in cross-section is what turns part of the fan’s sound energy back toward the machine instead of letting it ride the air column into the rest of the house.
It is the part for a single-fan machine that lives where people are: an S9 heating a basement, a heat-reuse build in a workshop, a bench machine in the corner of an office.
What it fits
The intake is the standard 120 × 120 mm fan face, which covers the Antminer S9 family and effectively any single-fan build turning a 120 mm fan. The outlet is a true 6-inch collar, so it drops into an existing 6-inch run wherever a plain shroud sits today: same flex duct, same worm clamp, same window port.
Two things to know before you choose it over the plain shroud. A silencer is a physically larger body — 218.2 × 210 × 210 mm — so it wants real space behind the machine, and a chamber draws on the same pressure budget your duct run spends. If the machine already runs warm, or the duct is a long route with several bends, buy the Universal Single 120 mm Fan to 6" Duct Shroud and win the noise back with placement. How it installs
- Seat the shroud over the exhaust fan and fix it on the fan’s own screw pattern.
- Slide 6-inch flex duct over the collar and pull a worm clamp down on it.
- Run the duct wherever it already goes — window port, inline fan, next room.
Nothing electrical is touched. The stock fan stays and keeps its own speed control, and the shroud comes back off in under a minute.
Why an expansion chamber quiets a duct run
Reactive silencing works on geometry, not absorption. Sound moving down a duct behaves like a wave in a pipe: meet a sudden change in cross-sectional area and part of it reflects back the way it came. Open the passage out sharply, hold that volume, neck it into the collar, and you have a reactive expansion chamber — the same element used in any exhaust that has to run near people. Nothing is consumed and nothing needs servicing. The shape is the mechanism.
The usual alternative is a lined box packed with acoustic foam. Foam works, and it also compresses, embrittles in hot air and eventually sheds into the airstream crossing your hashboards. This body carries no lining at all: one continuous PETG shell, no fasteners, no glued seams. PETG is the deliberate call, because it holds shape in ASIC exhaust heat where PLA softens.

Frequently asked questions
Will this fit any 120 mm fan, or only an Antminer?
Any 120 mm fan. The intake is drawn to the standard 120 × 120 mm fan face and its screw pattern, so it seats on an S9, an S9i, an older single-fan chassis or a custom build running a 120 mm case fan. What needs checking is space, not pattern: the body stands off the back of the machine further than a plain shroud does.
Can I use ordinary 6-inch flex duct?
Yes. The collar is a standard 6-inch outside diameter, the size insulated flex, aluminium hose and 6-inch inline fans are all built around. A worm clamp is all it takes. If your run uses rigid pipe, the 6-inch flex duct adapter makes that transition properly instead of taping two mismatched sizes together.
My miner has two fans. Do I buy two of these?
No. Two chambers on one machine eat twice the space and give the flow two throats to argue over. Use the dual 120 mm expansion-chamber silencer, which merges both fan columns into one plenum ahead of the step in cross-section. One merged path is the better acoustic body and the simpler duct run.
Does the chamber cost me airflow?
A chamber is one more element in the exhaust path, and every element spends part of the same pressure budget. A short straight 6-inch run with a healthy fan has margin for it. A long run full of elbows, or a machine already warm, is better served by the plain 6-inch shroud with the noise moved by distance.
