Description

Overview

The big wye. One 8-inch trunk, two 6-inch branches, for the installs where a single duct run has to serve two machines or one exhaust has to feed two destinations. It is one of the largest single-piece parts we make.

What it fits

Standard 8-inch trunk collar, two standard 6-inch branch collars. Every 6-inch shroud and silencer in the line connects straight to a branch; the trunk takes any 8-inch duct, coupler or port.

Measure before you order. Fit dimensions in this line are derived from published fan and chassis geometry and are not yet validated against measured production hardware. Check your flange size and the clearance around your machine against the footprint in the specifications below. If something does not fit, tell us — that is how the next revision gets better.

How it is used

As a collector, two 6-inch machine exhausts merge into one 8-inch trunk and out through a single 8″ window port. As a splitter, one big exhaust divides between two rooms — a workshop that wants the heat and an outside vent that takes it when the workshop is warm enough.

Why it helps

Two machines and one wall penetration is a common constraint, particularly in rented space where you do not get to cut a second hole. A wye at 8-inch trunk size is large enough that combining two 6-inch streams does not immediately choke both of them. Understand the trade honestly: shared trunks always couple the machines together, and the stronger fan set will win. If you can run separate ducts, do.

  • Shaped wye at trunk scale — two 6-inch branches into one 8-inch line
  • Lets two machines share a single wall penetration
  • Also splits one exhaust between two destinations
  • Single continuous body, no assembly

Open source — print it yourself, or buy it finished

Every shroud D-Central designs is released as an open file. The geometry for this part is free to download from our 3D models download center: use it, modify it, remix it, run it in your own shop, sell what you make from it. There is no licence to buy and no design gated behind a purchase. Shared knowledge is the whole reason this industry has open hardware at all, and we are not going to be the ones who stop passing it on.

This listing is for the finished part: made to order in PETG and shipped from Montreal, Quebec. If you would rather have it in your hands than spend an evening making one, buy it here — that is what pays for the next design in the line. You can also support the open-source work directly through D-Central’s fund page.

Frequently asked questions

Is sharing a duct between two miners a good idea?

It is a compromise, and worth knowing before you build it. Whichever machine has the stronger fans will pressurise the trunk and push back against the weaker one. It works, and people do it, but a separate run per machine is the layout that behaves predictably. Do this when the building leaves you no choice.

Can I balance the two branches?

Only with a damper in one of them. A blast gate in the stronger branch is the usual approach — that part is in development.

Why is it so much bigger than the 6-inch wye?

Because a wye that merges two 6-inch streams needs enough length for the merge to happen at a shallow angle. Compressing it would turn it into a tee, which is the shape that costs you pressure. The size is the point.
